hi guys i have recently purchased an 86 larson inboard with the 3.0 mercruiser in it. (alpha one outdrive). the motor runs great and had new bellows put on the outdrive last year including a new water impellar. however i noticed some slight cracking on one of the larger rubber hoses on the left side of the outdrive (looking at the boat from behind) that seems to head into the motor. i was wondering A)should i replace this before i take it out this spring? B) what is the purpose of this hose, and C)is it hard to replace if need be. thanks alot guys, im loving this site. so incredibly helpful!

that is the water passage hose that goes from the bellhousing to the gimble housing - if it fails you won't have cooling water supplied to the engine

im surprised in that condition it wasn't replaced when the bellows replaced

you have to remove the bell housing to replace the hose

it may have been. the hose has very small cracks in it. is there anyway i can repair the hose without having to totally replace it? to totally replace the hose would i have to take the whole outdrive off the boat? thanks.

Any time the bellows, shift boot need attention ,you should also replace the water inlet hose and install a new shift cable.
average life is 5-7 years anyway.

-yes, and the bell housing too

-no

-no

pulling the drive is no big deal, you should be familiar with doing it anyways for annual maintenance, the bellhousing is not that difficult to remove either, once you do the job you will realize its not a big adventure

ok. this is my first inboard so ive never had to pull an outdrive. do u have any idea what it would cost to have it done at a shop? if its not too pricy ill prolly just have it done professionally. im going to have it in the shop for a tune up and to have a marine mechanic go through her before i take it out anyway. thanks alot for the help.
