Re: Weed eater Trolling motor??

This might be a too good to be true deal. I was just looking at the guy's EBay feedback and he is selling alot of plans for various things. Among those are a number of experimental category, fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. He is selling this stuff for very low amounts of money, and having once been interested in building a "homebuilt" airplane, I can tell you that they are generally not available for 5 or 10 bucks.

He is selling plans for something called a "piston jet turbine engine." That's one I'd love to see.

Looks great and well worth the few dollars to check it out.

OK, I have to ask the dumb***** question. How did he connect the weedeater engine to an electric power head and that gas tank looks like it might pollute the lake or the boat pretty bad.

I don't see any reason for it not to work, although there are some
inconveniences to wonder about. I'd think you'd be adding gas into the little
tank quite often, and I wouldn't want to have to wear ear muffs to protect
my hearing while using the motor. Alternative would be to risk hearing loss.
Sure wouldn't be any normal conversation going on when it is running.
Efficiency is at higher rpms with them motors, so I doubt if slow speeds would
be effective and smooth.

Maybe I like my electric trolling too much.

I'm sceptical. If it were feasible, I'd think somebody would be selling lower end kits to do it. (BTW, as a mechanical engineer , I REALLY don't see how you could run an electric motor lower off one!). That said, the unit on the right (with mechanical prop) could work in theory. I'd have to wonder about the noise & smoke at head level (No underwater exhaust here!) as well as the vibration and lack of power. Fun to think about but I think this is a fix to a problem that isn't there. If you need gas power for a canoe or other small boat, there are plenty of used 1.25-3 hp outboards around that can do the job better for not allot more investment.
( Case in point: I just picked up a NICE 2 hp, 23# evinrude for $125 just this week. Sweet little engine!)

As Wee Hooker mentioned the electric motor lower unit won't work. In order for that to work you need a driveshaft or drive cable like a Weedeater uses from the powerhead to the prop. Electrics simply aren't designed that way and I can't see anyway to retrofit it. However, Weedeater trolling motors are nothing new. I remember seeing one on TV over 20 years ago. Too loud, ineffecient and NOISY to be practical. Also too expensive when compared to electric trolling motors or used small hp outboards.
