weeds in newly planted grass

So I planted some new grass about a month ago. It's been cooler but it is starting to come up now, along with a lot of weeds. I'm afraid the weeds are going to choke out my new grass. Is there anything I can put down to get rid of the weeds without killing off my new grass??

Don't think so. Most selective weed killers should only be used on more mature lawns. If I am not mistaken, instructions will tell you how long to wait before you use them on young lawns.

You'll probably just have to wait until the appropriate time.

The majority of your seed is weeds anyways to provide cover for the seed to mature. Just have to wait for awhile and then kill em.

I don't think that's normally the case. Look at the package and you should see a guaranteed percentage of weeds and that will be quite low. There are some mixtures where the grower will add fast growing rye varieties for quick ground cover but those shouldn't be considered weeds. Weed seeds can be in the soil to begin with, in the topsoil you added, or in straw used as a ground cover. Since weeds typically germinate faster, they will appear to be more plentifull that the grass seedlings. Give it some time before you try any weed killer. The grass needs to be mature to stand up to it. You can start using some spot control like pulling weeds when you see them. The times that I've replanted yards, it's taken a full season for the grass to mature and start crowding out the weeds. After that, it's spot treatment to get rid of isolated bad actors.

Biggest think now is to keep up the water so all the grass seed can germinate and has a good growing environment.

Best thing you can put down are your knees and start weeding by hand....... have fun! We know what you will be doing all summer!

If it's green it gets mowed in my yard... we have a couple of hundred trees on two and a half acres.

At least you have something green growing.Ive had alot of failures w grass planting,w good prep. and not even alot of weeds survived because of a steep slope,washing away in storms, and alot of shade in my yard!

On your first moves of the season set your mower one level higher and keeo it there the new grass will eventually choke out the weeds fr the most part and another good practice is what was mentioned earlier pop-em out by hand! Whatever your do do not use a selective herbisde until @ least next year!!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. The bag of grass seed i got said less than 1 percent weeds so i know they were already in the soil. I guess I will pull them out the best i can but that may take awhile.
