Weight/Persons Capacity

My new boat is rated for 6 persons or 850 lbs. The manufacturers specs indicate a max total load capacity of 2000 lbs.
Doing the math: Max fuel (72gal X 8lbs per gal)=576 lbs and passengers at 850 lbs leaves me with about 550lbs left for ice, gear and etc.

However, there are two prevailing factors that have influenced my question. One is the fact that all my three kids weigh less than 150lbs. combined, My wife and I combined may add about another 300 lbs. for a total passenger capacity of about 450lbs. The other is the fact that I don't intend to be riding around with my fuel tanks more than half full.
With these factors in mind, I will be loaded less than half capacity than what the boat is safely rated for.

Since I will significantly be under both passenger and total weight limits, would I be able to substitue (1 or 2) additional passengers to the 6 passenger manufacturer rating as long as I remain under the total passenger weight?

The boat is a 19ft center console w 2 aft seats, 2 helm seats, a bench seat in front of the console, and front bow cushions. The boat will be powered by a 150 yamaha 4 stroke.

Helpful advice appreciated

Kevin
<><

Re: Weight/Persons Capacity

If all passengers are seated and the boat is well balanced AND NOBODY MOVES you might be okay, Kevin, but that never happens.

Don't exceed the passenger count on the capacities plate.

Good luck. :)

Re: Weight/Persons Capacity

This is a great question that I also wante to know the answer to. My question is a bit different. My boat can hold 9 or 1300 lbs. My question is this. Our good friends have 5 kids(god love them) one of which is a 7 month old. We have 1 child. My question is this. With the 5 kids and us we would have 10 people in the boat but be under the total pounds. Would I still be in a violation?

PAkev,If you read the rating capacity of your boat you'll find that the 550 lbs. you have left over in your opening statement is for the engine.Boat full rated capacity is persons, motor ,and gear.

If a DNR officer, or a coast guard cutter was to stop and make a check, they do not have the facilities on the spot to weigh your rig and passengers, but they will check to see if you are over capacity on the rated passengers. I am setting here typing this into my computer and am no more than 40 feet from the lake shore. I see boats, of all kinds pontoons, ski boats, and jet ski's go by that are quite obviously overloaded with passengers, but there is no way I can tell by sight that they are over the weight limits. Also, remember when you are counting passengers, you also are to count any persons that may be on skies, tubes, or knee boards, that you are pulling. :D :D :D :D

I kind of thought the person capacity would be a non negotiable issue. I intend to double check state regs but anticipate they will be in agreement of NMMA ratings on the capacity plate. However, it is nice to know we have a wide margin for some extra growing room and lots of fish.

Thanks for the input.
Kevin

Does anyone know if a dog counts towards your person limit?

yes i believe your dog is considered a passenger.
and that is one of those technicalities so they can give you a ticket.

PAkev: When figuring gasoline weight use 6.1 lbs per gallon, even with oil in the gas it is still lighter than water. That will help you a little weight wise.

Count your Blessings
Not your troubles
:)
