Weight Ratio

Just out of curiosity...do boat manufacturers try to stick to a certain bow to stern or stern to bow weight ratio? I know it would be different for every boat, but there has surely got to be a sweet spot where performance, fuel economy and maneuverability is at it's absolut best. And how would one, building his or her own boat, acheive this sweet spot without the use of scales and such?

Re: Weight Ratio

Interesting question that I have never seen raised before and look forward to see if you get any responses from a technical viewpoint. My inclination is there probably isn't going to be an exact sweet spot as even with a well designed and balanced boat, the center of gravity will more depend on load (fuel, gear, coolers, people and other stuff) that will vary even trip to trip. I suspect that it is not much of an issue for lets say a pontoon boat while it would be very important to a high performance race boat. Even with racing boats it will depend greatly on the class of boat. For example the old three point hydro boats had the engine placed well forward and the Formula style deep vee will find the engines well aft. For the average family boat I don't think it makes a big difference. Even if it is off from the "ideal" you can alter the effect by how you load your boat, use of trim tabs and power trim.

Interesting question though.
