Its a bit odd not being oily as it looks to be coming out the little overflow hole in the middle of the LU too.
It doesnt look like gear oil colour or unburnt two stroke colour but you never know, i had some red colour stuff the other year

it permanently discolored the paint where it leaks. its def not gear oil as thats the extension piece since its a long shaft motor, and there is no way the gear oil could make it all the way up that high

Maybe not, but at high rpm the driveshaft would fling stuff up quite high if the seal went, the waterpump would also get some in there which would go into the engine and come down the leg again.
id check that oil level to be safe

hard to tell from a picture but it looks like its been spray painted with a cheap black and a gas leak has run under the motor down the inner leg until it hit the joint then it ran on the outside of the leg removing the paint

Lower unit was primered with a green primer (or it had previously been painted green) and then repainted black. Nothing wrong here other than a bad paint job.

yeah, i just showed a guy at west marine while i was buying some repair parts and he said it looked like someone put the wrong paint on it. and i also discovered that the guy i bought it off of had the plugs in there only hand tight, so some gas leaked out from the plugs and ran down the engine  i was able to turn them 1/4 turn by hand when i just checked them
