weird noise from engine

I have a weird noise coming from the rear of my engine where it meets the outdrive... I have a volvo 3.0 engine and outdrive...It sounds like a dinging noise or better yet like 2 bottles in a cooler of water..It does not seem to change with engine speed. It can be in gear or not outdrive up or down it stays the same . any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bernie

New sound? Like tommays said, year & type would be helpful. Could be noisy exaust shutter though-

Sorry about the missing info. I have a 2004 Stingray 180rx with a 3.0 volvo 135 hp engine and a SX stern drive...

Gimbal bearing, ujoints, drive????? Pull the drive and check for water in the bellows. Yes I know it's a new boat. Then check the drive oil.
