I am having some sort of weird problem with my 72 Chrysler 70 HP outboard. I had the boat out on the lake a couple weekends ago and it completely died on me. I tried restarting it several times and each time I tried to start it it sounded like the power got less and less. I had thought it was the carbs but I took them out and cleaned them, yet it kept doing the same thing. I finally got it started with quite a bit of starter fluid and a jump from another battery. I don't believe it is the battery though. I can run it on WOT with no problem, but it dies each time I bring it back to idle. Do any of you have any idea what the problem could be?

Check the setting of the air/fuel screws on the carbs. Should be 1-1 1/4 out from lightly seated.
How is your idleschrew set? The one on the towershaft that rests on the engineblock.

When you try to start it with the boatbattery does it turn the flywheel over fast or not? And does it start with a other battery jumping?
If it does not turn over with the boatbattery check the charging circuit on the engine.
You suppose to have the Motorola or Delta Magnapower CD ignitionsystem and it needs 12VDC from the battery to work.
If the voltage drop to about 9-10VDC and this can occure when trying to start because the starter sucks a hugh of current the ignition will not work. If the battery is not charged enough the voltage will drop when trying to start.

The battery will start it by itself. I set it on the charger and it will crank over but doesn't still sound quite right. I can start it with starter fluid and regular battery but I have to run it wide open for it to stay running.
