Weird Question... maybe

I used my boat on sunday, it had been sitting for a month and a half, and the battery still had a charge. I took her out of the water and put her in the garage..... and left the key in the boat, in the on position (accidentally). I go there today, battery is dead as a doornail.

Now this may seem like a stupid question, but i didnt leave anything on in the boat such as lights or blower, i dont think ...... so should it still have drained the battery? Or do i have electrical problems? I know everything can run with the key in the on position, but if everything is off.... why did it drain?

You left the ignition circuit energized ...

Everything is not off. Simple fact, the ignition is on when the key is in the on position. That alone will kill a battery if left long enough. Probably other parasitic draws on the battery also when the key is on.

if key is on batteries are still going to drain even if nothing is running.

As did any gauges that this boat has. The fuel gauge, tach, oil pressure and voltmeter would all be drawing current -- albeit a small amount.

Good news is if you put the battery on a charger is should charge right up especially if you use a slow charge.

With the key in the on position you have activated electrical circuits that will draw on the battery power.
Charge her up buttercup !!!:D

Now if you have a dead battery with the key in the off position, then it's a different ballgame. In that case, disconnect the negative terminal and run a volt meter between the negative terminal and the negative cable. Then, if it shows a 12 volt output, start diconnecting breakers or fuses until you found the one that drops the volts down to 2 volts or less. Bingo! That's the bad circuit to fix. Bill
