Hello all.
Mercury 90hp
1988

I have had intermittent trouble starting this engine. I have not been able to determine a pattern to what causes the problem (yet) but I can tell you what happens when it does start and hopefully that will give some clue to the cause of the problem.
Boat had been stored for couple of weeks since last start. Put it in the water, primed bulb until good and hard, pushed in key for en-richer for about 10sec, put idle lever to fast and cranked - nothing. Cranked on and off for 2 - 3 mins during this time I checked bulb was hard, tried idle lever in different positions etc. Oil/fuel slick was noted on top of water around engine (I think this is normal for a 2 stroke?) .
Eventually went out on auxiliary and tried big engine a few minutes later after some cranking there would be a PUFF like one cylinder firing once, starter motor would whine as it had jumped off fly wheel. Turn key again - PUFF .... turn key again - PUFF..... after 4 -5 occurrences of this, she fired up like normal and ran perfect for the rest of the day.
Is this engine getting flooded or something?? It has new plugs. New fuel. Battery is new (and big).
I could go out to her now, put the muffs on and crank her for 2 secs and I bet she would start.
Any ideas??
