Re: Welch plug serial no
I searched this forum for J29 and turned up the following entrys:
J2985246 1968
J2974236 1968
j2968258 Yours
J2945926 1968
J2934597 1968
J2913741 1968

And the colour green would match 1968 as well (for Johnson). So there's really no question about what year it is.

As for HP, presuming this is an inline-2cylinder engine, here are the possibilities:
40hp: Roundish base (gasket surface), much larger than your 18hp. There is a thermostat tower on one side of the head.
33hp: Squarish base, much larger than your 18hp. There is no thermostat tower on the head, although the head is made of several peices.
20hp: Looks a *lot* like your 18hp.
9.5hp: Looks *very* strange. Carb comes off the back.
6hp: Looks "normal" but much smaller than your 18hp. There's a thermostat in the top of the head under a plate held in with three screws.
5hp: I think this powerhead is indestiguishable from the 6hp.
3hp: Very small, no thermostat (or thermostat cover) in the head.

Hope that helps!

(there is also a rare 15hp engine, but I think they were all painted grey)
