I have a yamaha stern drive with a L4 3.0 GM inboard. When changing the valve cover gasket and the exhaust manifold gasket I discoverd a weld in the cylinder head just below the manifold . The weld seemed to be starting to rust from the inside. The previous owner failed to inform me of this. The question I have is--- Is it possible to repair the weld and not have to worry about being stranded on the water if the weld cracks.

P.S. I have had the boat on the water and it runs great.

v
after reading your post i am not sure were your crack is but it sounds like the cylinder head

other than the fact that it is rusting do you fell there is a problem with it at this time

it has been my personal experance that its best to not weld at all in these areas and if it is done you really only get one chance to do it right

tommays

Welcome to iboats and that sounds like freeze damage. As long as you're not getting water in the oil, it apparently survived. Not unusual for inlines. Clean it good and paint it. Carry along a stick of Aluminox putty if you're worried about it. I wouldn't be terribly concerned.

Well,
If it's below the manifolds, it's the Engine Block that's Cracked.....
In Fact, Most I4s that suffer freeze damage crack in this spot..... 2nd most common spot is on the Inside , Opposite the crack you have Now.......

I think Willy be Correct in his accessment....
It's already been "Repaired"......
As long as there's No water in the Oil,
Run It,+ Have Fun............

how did you see a weld on the inside of the head? here is where digital pics would be great.
I have had many heads and blocks welded. a good welder can manage a great one can effect a permanant repair. I only use the great ones
