I have a Wellcraft 21sl 1997 model, the shift control also operates the gear engage and trim tilt. The problem is when it goes into gear, which is fine, the throtle then kicks in and it becomes really stiff to move which makes mooring very difficult.
Does anyone know how to remove them and what to look for or any other help would be appreciated.
The cables are in good condition and the shift cable is new, due to it breaking last season when i was really stiff.

Have you disconected the cable from the control to determine if it is the contol or the cable that is causing your problem?

You should post a picture of your control. Maybe someone has the same one and can comment on its removal.

Re: Wellcraft 21sl shift control

I see from a previous post that you have a Volvo drive. I have a 98 Wellcraft with a Volvo drive so we may have a similar control. In those years when Volvo was still kinda joint with OMC, many of the boats had OMC controls like this one:

Only problem is that if you want to put in a new control(in my case a new Volvo control) you have to change the throttle cable because the old OMC cables are not the type 33 cable.

If you have that style, I can give you removal instructions.

Thanks Bruce, yes my control is the same as the one on the link. Could you please provide removal instructions to me.
I will need to check what its like when the cables are disconnected.

You peel off the rubber off the center button. Remove the screw in the center and remove the button.

There is an allen set screw that you can reach from the very bottom of the handle. It is tought to see. Loosen this an the handle will pull off.

The control mechanism is held onto your boat with 4 screws. Hopwfully you have access behind this panel because the assembly is mounted from the back side. I had to remove an adjacent upholstered panel and cut a large hole to be able to pull the assembly through that when I was working on it. Your boat is probably different.
