Do you think this boat is a good deal?

2002 Wellcraft Excalibur Platinum Edition
4.3 Mercruiser - 49 hours
Lots of extra options
Custom Trailer

Pics indicate that the boat is in excellent shape.

Asking price is $16,900

NADA has average retail around $16500 without options.

Has anyone had good / bad experience with this brand / model? I see they stopped making this model after that year...was that a quality issue?

It was a marketing issue. Genmar decided their Wellcraft division should focus on the fish boat sector. And walked away from pleasure boats and cruisers. The molds for the Wellcraft bowriders were actually transferred to Seaswirl. Still in use at Seaswirl.

The Wellcraft bowriders were a decent boat, but not fancy. Roughly on a par with Glastron. Ask for a demo ride.

Kelly Cook

As far as the price goes, yes, I've seen them advertised for a lot higher and the hours are well below normal use. I just bought a 20' Excalibur with 45 hours on it and this model seems to sell well over 20k and it's a 2000. Mine is the closed bow model which is a little better in the ocean.

I was told the 1999-2000 Ex's were considered the "mini-scarabs" because of the technology from off shore racing that went into their hull construction. However, Wellcraft reportedly only used the more expensive and stronger construction for those two years. Your boat and mine appear very similar and I believe the powertrain for both boats are the same. I get a lot of compliments on mine. Also that Bravo outdrive on Ex's is much better than the Alpha used by most boats, least that is what I'm told. I had a marine surveyor tell me the Ex's were an 8 on a 1-10 scale for quality.

Im with Kook on the appointment's, Wellcraft did not appoint them to lavishly. However i think you will find that they have a superior ride quality in heavy water condition's. They also are very fast boat's for there engine vs size and one last note...In there construction i am sure you will find the only wood used in the boat will be the deck and transom. The stringer's are composite and they build a very strong and well glassed deck 3/4" implying well bulit.

If you can test a 20 Rinker or larson in rough water, the Wellcraft should be smoother in a chop and a dryer ride...as to money well that's up to you but we are in a soft market.

Fuel injected or carm engine - how many hp? That's none to much power but may be a good fit for that boat. I assume it also came with an optional V-8.

If it's carbed, seems expensive to me but maybe a good boat if you get the price down a bit. If it's fuel injected it may be a very fair price. I'm no expert, but I've read that Wellcraft BRs were a pretty solid boat and had a more substancial ride than a Glastron or Bayliner type 'entry level" boat.

IF it's in great shape once you really look it over, AND the enigne runs perfectly, make a lower offer and see what you can get! This is NOT an easy boat to sell in this price range I would think, because some NEW boats (Bayliner, Glastron, Stingray) sell their NEW 18' for pretty close to this price!

;) You need to get in Excaliber sometime with 4 people and run in a 1' or 2' chop @ 30-40 mph then jump in a Stingray or Bayliner....and do the same thing. Different world's i assure you

OK, not to argue, but didn't I just post that Wellcraft is a "more substancial ride" than the cheap boats? My point on price is that many people willing to fork over $16k or so aren't looking in the used market necessarily. I personally would MUCH prefer a good condition better built used boat for the same price as a new lesser boat.

Re: Wellcraft Excalibur 190

Mark i bought a 2002 excalibur 190 brand new in 2003 it was a leftover. i purchased it for what you would be paying for it now. it was a great little boat it had a volvo 4.3 carbeurator motor it would do about 55 handled great and got good gas mileage traded it in for a 24ft 4winns funship becouse the wife wanted a port-o-potty and you know, always a need for a bigger boat i still miss the excalibur the 4winns sucks gas but is more roomy. I had very little trouble with it. It is built average as far as detail built by genmar so certain models in the boat industry were identical there was a 4winns exactly like it a couple other brands out there also you can tell by the vec hull wich is 1 piece no stringers. The 20 ft excalibur which is the 210 i believe is a totally different and more expensive boat cannot compare the 2. Make sure you get the volvo far superior than the mercruiser dont care what anyone ses i have a 260 mpi merc with a alpha drive PIECE OF JUNK .
