Hey guys! THANKS in advance for reading this long post..
I posted in the Mercruiser forum about a Wellcraft V-20 I'm looking at as a possible trade for my Glassmaster. I had a buyer lined up for the Glassmaster but he bailed at the last minute. It's fully restored and I love it, but I want something with more space for fishing and able to handle rougher water. This is the story with the wellcraft according to the owner. He bought it from his cousin after it overheated while they were out together. He pulled the 250ci out of it and bought a new crate 292 and new lower outdrive (alpha 1, old one was cracked). Lost his job and had no time or money to continue with it. The rest of the boat is in good condition no soft spots, needs cleaning though. The motor needs starter, alternator, manifolds, carb, and plugs put back in and the outdrive needs put on and bellows replaced. He has all the parts including new bellows. The trailer "may" need new tires, I'm going to call that NEEDS NEW TIRES for finance sake here.

My Glassmaster is an 18' closed bow with a Merc 115 i-6 and is in GREAT condition and water ready. I've come up with some pros and cons to this trade and depending on actually seeing the boat I think im gonna go for it, do you guys have any comments?

I may only be 19..but I know how purchases can go when you get excited about buying something so I wanted some second opinions.

I have experience with large i/os and inboards (thanks to Powersquad at the Academy) but none with outdrives, however I can follow my way through a manual...i hope!

Pictures of the wellcraft are on this thread...

Re: wellcraft / glassmaster trade thoughts

man I dont know ....sounds kind of risky.....if all is as presented, solid hull, new motor, new outdrive and only needs assembly and less than $1000 worth of parts I guess it wouldnt be too bad. But if anyone of those 3 is wrong you'll probably be kickin yourself....

Can appreciate your excitement about the Wellcraft :D and I'm sure you will love it...but lets establish some figures...how much do you think you could get to sell your Glassmaster outright and how much do you think you will need to put out of pocket to get the V-20 running and looking good....if the total of those 2 figures is in the $3500-$4500 range I think you would be better off selling the glassmaster and buying another V-20 ready for the water.

That boat was made nearly identical from 1970 to 1996. Over the next 3 months especially in your area you will be able to find at least a half dozen for sale in that price range. on top of that if you are really into fishing I think you will be happier with an outboard instead of an i/o.

my advice, take your time, sell the glasstron take the cash and roll it into a v-20.

thanks for the links!!! I do see your point.

I wouldn't expect to get more than 2K for my Glassmaster..no one wants closed bow runabouts even in good condition!

But I think ill take everyone's advice and stay away from this one.

Has anyone done an I/O to OB bracket conversion on one of these?

Re: wellcraft / glassmaster trade thoughts

put your question up on V20 site (I see you joined yesterday;)) you will definitely get some reponses... I believe a few guys have done it but you will need to beef up the transom to take the weight of the motor.....ideally if you can find a V-20 that had an original sea-drive on it that is the best candidate for a bracket conversion but they are getting harder to find.

thanks for postin I'll check the site! I'd definitely need to strengthen the transom but I was just thinkin about it because i have a good 150 inline merc sittin around...

I have nothing against an I/O either, I would definitely appreciate the better fuel economy..but my initial concern with that boat was if I could put the drive back on and aligned just by following the manual.
