Electric start. I noitced the key is able to be pushed in but I'm not sure that means or does anything.

I have the same situation with a 2001 40hp, 2 cy Mercury Tracker. Does the solenoid squirt gas into the carb or cylinder when you push in the key? Couldn't figure it out. I could find no physical devices on the carb that would choke it.

It lets fuel drain from the carb bowl into the crankcase. Crude but effective.

-W

Re: Were is the choke

I dont hear any sound of a solenoid kicking in or out by pushing in the key so I guess its not an electric choke. ???

You will need to take the cowling off the motor. Turn the key to the RUN position then push the key in and you should hear a "click" near the carburetor. It isn't very loud. Oh this may be obvious but I'll say it anyways. The battery needs to be hooked connected for it to work.

yep
listen for the click as described above. RodC must have the same customer as I do. we just did a 10 hour service on his new rig. he picked it up and called from the ramp that nothing worked. he brought it back and we showed him the battery on/off switch. he had never used it and I secure tham everytime I am done servicing :) but the nasty words he used with the service manager about the techs while on the phone will be long remembered.

Re: Were is the choke

i have the same choke solenoid on my 89 40 hp mariner, turn the key on push in and hold for 5-7 seconds, that primes the cyls. the choke solenoid is on the left side of the carbs and feeds fuel to the cyls, the line goes behind the control box directly into the cyls.NOTE-- you should hear a click sound everytime you push in on the key. hope this helps.
