I find nothing listed in my old engine book under West Bend. The only drive system I can find or know of that used an outboard engine to drive it was the OMC DU series. It used a four cylinder outboard engine laying flat witht the sparkplugs facing up.

You can see pictures of my problem..at
http://photos.yahoo.com/kg8gp@sbcglobal.net

I got the boat from my mother-in-law, it has been parked in a field since 1988, so far every thing looks solid and repairable. the color has to change (black is to hot for summer fun)

correction...boat is an "Aristo Craft" not an "Astro Craft" it should be between 1961 to 1965, i think it uses the same power head as the 80 hp. Tiger shark outboard, i would like to find a service manual for the motor and also one for the out drive. Any leads on were I can find a manual or if you have one, a copy would be of great help......Thanks.

I can also be reached at kg8gp@sbcglobal.net
Again Thanks

Well you have tweaked my interest. Been doing this since the later 60's and never seen one or heard of one of theses. I'm gonna be surprised if it ain't related to Volvo. Never even seen an outboard that looked like that. Volvo did build some outboards early on but never saw one.

Found Motor Tag....it was right in front of my eyes...I even took a close up picture...it was located in the least likely position, on the starter cone, good thing the starter is origional.
West Bend 80 HP.
Model #80241
Serial #1001
you'll find a link to my pictures in my earler post.

I will tell you one thing chrysler bought westbend and the rectifier and fuel pump look chrysler to me. It is probably a two stroke. if you do get it running make sure you learn to maintain it properly. Have you done a compression test yet?

I can't turn it over until I take the out drive off. the u-joint are rusted up solid. I can only turn it about 15 degrees. I'm going to pull the out drive and try and get it running.

Re: west bend stern drive identification

I've had a bit of good luck, I had posted on an old engine forum and a guy contacted me with an identical motor and outdrive he was pulling from a boat to covert to outboard, sold me the complete motor and outdrive and controls and wiring for $200 I went and picked it up and it rolls over easy and seems to have good compression. he said it didn't have any spark, but I can fix that. I still need to find bellow and water pump.

Re: west bend stern drive identification

Hello,
I am just new to the forum, and now that internet is here, as it was not when I got my boat in '90. My '61 Thompson Cuddy had one crudely installed when I got it. Was such a hack job, but a great idea, when I took the boat apart (rot everywhere), I fixed up the Sharko. From what I understand it is an 80hp Chrysler 2 stroke power head coupled to the outdrive, Westbend, with Chrysler outboard lower unit. I lost a thrust washer which destroyed the gears, found a set that fit, to the best of my knowledge, 80 to 135hp Chrysler outboards. The engine had piston slap, lasted one season and I could not afford to fix it, plus it was eating me out of house and home in gas and oil. I carry 36 gallons and would burn it up in a day. My neighbor had a '73 Datsun pickup all apart which I had already bought the rear end for my '67. So I bought the engine and trans for a hundred bucks and cloned the 1600cc Datsun on to the Sharko. About the same horses and I get 4 days fishing instead of one! I rebuilt the outdrive twice since then, just general stuff, and it is in great condition today. Best part of this unit is that it is simple, no complicated hydraulics, electrics, etc. Only mod I did to it was add a double seal at the prop shaft. I am still looking for info on this setup, as very few even remember it. I lost my prop nut and have a jerry rig on there, so am hunting for that goodie. Jim
