Lubedude, John Denver's plane was a good plane except for one thing: it lacked the software that compensates for a severely drunk pilot....

The airplane pictured is one of the last X planes. It was a test bed for aerodynamics, and compensatory flight control software. The key trait of the plane pictured (can't remember it's designation)was it's ability to turn on a dime, thanks to it's inherent flight instability.

That plane is a X-29. A foward swept version of the F-5 with one large engine from a f-18 instead of 2 small engines from a T-38.
Also John Denver died in a Vari-eze(sp?)
A home built plane designed by Burt Rutan.

bluewater19,

Good try!

The Grumman X-29 Technology Demenstrator, was dirived from a Grumman F-9 Panther fuselage, not an Northrup F-5, that had composite forward swept wings grafted onto it, and was powered by a GE-111A jet engine from a prototype F-16, not the GE tubines used in the F-18.

The X-29 is the first 100% Fly-By-Wire aircraft ever produced.

All flight controls are controlled by the 4 on-board flight control computers.

Essentially, if the computers fail, the pilot only has one option...EJECTION!

Only (2) X-29 aircraft were ever built, with #1 in the photo.

X-29 #1 was only used in level flight, essentially proving that it would fly, although it had technically already flown during taxi tests in June and July, 1988, at the Naval Weapons Reserve Depot, Calverton, NY, where they were built, before its official first flight at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. on Oct. 22, 1988.

X-29 #2 was used for dive tests, inverted flight, and every imaginable test they could throw at it.

Niether plane ever had any in flight mechanical or electrical problems.

Niether plane is operational today, although they do remain at Edwards AFB.

This is the last photo of X-29 #1 at Calverton, before being shipped to Edwards AFB.

John Denver could only dream that he had a plane like the X-29!

Re: Wet T-Shirt winner!

I stand corrected.
Since I was a kid I thought the X-29 used a tigershark body with the F-404 power plant. I guess I read some bad info somewhere.
Thanks for the correction.

Re: Wet T-Shirt winner!

No problem bluewater19,

The only reason I know so much about the X-29, is because I actually built them!

Why would Grumman use a fuselage from Northrup??

I use to work for Grumman Aircraft Corp., mainly building EA-6B Prowlers and A-6E Intruders, and for the last 6 months of employment, the F-14D Tomcat, and I was one of the fortunate ones to get to work on the X-29 project.

Re: Wet T-Shirt winner!

I thought old John Denver died cause he forgot one very important thing. GAS!!!!! Fill'er up please.

Actually, he had gas, but he didnt switch tanks to the one that had the gas. The empty one gave him enough to get off the ground, then as the engine sputtered, he tried to switch tanks and inadvertantly pulled back on the stick, causing the plane to stall.

Ken
