So we finally got my 1986 SportCraft with a 04' 70hp Suzuki on the back, re did all the teak gunnels, re wired and installed a new inboard fuel tank. While installing the fuel tank I found (what Im guessing is the stringer) completely dry, good right!? well, today I was down at the dock sorting out an automated bilge issue, while i was trying to get the bilge out my fingers happened to feel around... there are 3 PVC pipes that lead to the bilge, where they come from I don't know, however these 3 pipes come thru a piece of plywood that is the bilge. the pipes are not perfectly set in this wood and there is some exposed corners that are just ply and no fiberglass! wet wood and worse its mushy to the touch... This has me horrified after all the time put into the boat. Its to be wet slipped this summer and I'm wondering if thats a good idea? I want to leave it as is and figure the problem out in the fall... what are the repercussions of this? and how screwed is this hull?

Thanks in Advance guys

Re: Wet Wood in bilge

You can read the resto threads to get the horror stories and successful ressurections. Wet slip should not be any more dangerous then if you didn't have any mushy plywood. Make sure of the basics (good bilge pump or two, good cover, drain plug and any thru hulls sealed well).

No one can really say without seeing the boat, but chances are good you can run it this season without worry. As far as long term, it's really up to you how much work it needs and is wirth to you. Most people here that run older boats will tell you it's worth the effort to fix since than you know the boat inside out and can be confident it's in good shape.
