Hello, I painted my boat with the interlux brightside paint about a month ago. I have a tape line that I need to get rid of and I do not really want to repaint the whole boat, so I am wondering if I can wetsand and buff the paint similar to what you would do on a car. If so, with what grit and what compound do I use? Thank you

Yep, I'd start with 1000 grit, and drop to 800 if needed. Work up to 1500 then polish

Re: wetsand and buff interlux brightside

I had heard on various forums that Interlux does not recommend to wetsand and polish on the last coat so I should be able to do this without any negative affects? Also, when It comes to polishing, what kind of compound should I use and what kind of pad for my High speed buffer? Thank you

Re: wetsand and buff interlux brightside

different compounds require different pads.

i use a lambs wool pad for most gellcoat applications.

a special foam pad for glazing and a three strand nylon for compounding.

these are all in line with the specs of each product.

i dont understand what you mean by tape line.......do you have a high ridge on the line? and want to knock it down?

if so.....then sanding is your only choice......i would go 600.....dry the up from there.

600 still cuts....at 8 and above, you are just polishing.

The tapeline is an area that I had to repaint that has a ridge of paint from peeling off the tape. I have heard from other forums that your not supposed to wetsand this paint? Are we sure that this is ok to do and I will get the shine back after buffing?

The maker says not to in their tech stuff.

Don't know if it will be fine, just that they say no.

I've used it, but never sanded or buffed it. It is very soft though, so take it easy, I think a buffer would cut right through it quickly. Do a small test section first to see what happens.

Thanks for all the input, I am just wondering if anybody has tried this before?

Old thread, but I'll add my experience. Interlux does suggest not to buff Brightside in their tech data and in their online help section. I repainted our 35 year old trawler for the second time 3 years ago. The boat stays in the water and we buff and polish every year - the paint still looks fresh. I painted the skiff at the same time, have not buffed it and while the paint has held up it is beginning to show that white, chalky oxidation that comes off on your fingers when you rub the paint. I'd never buffed a boat prior to this and had a professional service do it the first time while I learned. They were aware of Interlux's suggestion not to buff or polish Brightside and only wanted to know how long since it had been painted as they suggested allowing 2 or 3 months to cure. I will note that it DOES take longer to completely cure than I expected. We painted the head/shower with the same paint at the same time and it continued to gas for several months. To keep negative comments to a minimum at the time I found it prudent to open the cabin up to air out prior to my wife's arrival at the marina.
