Whale watching

Took the wife, our two boys, and the neighbors two boys out on the ocean on a whale watching cruise. It was a rough day on the water and at least 10 people got a little green around the gills. Thankfully my group had no incidents <br /><br />We saw 6 whales (2 Minke(sp) and 4 humpbacks), we had a couple of them completely breech the surface within 50 feet of the boat!! We got a few good pics of the humpbacks tails sticking out of the water.<br /><br />Seeing the size of these impressive mammals made me think of the courage that whaling men a hundred years ago had to have had to cruise up beside one of them, stick a harpoon into it and then hold on for dear life.<br /><br />It was a pretty educational adventure for the kids and a good introduction to the sea for them (it was the first time on the big pond for them).

I didn't have the digital camera with me (wife wouldn't let me bring it), she is turning the film in today so I should have pics by the end of the week.

Did that a few years back off of Bar Harbor. It was just after a storm and there were huge rollers and our tin can bobbed like a cork. It was a proud day for us. The wife (a certified scuba diver that dove all over, many miles from shore) spent most of her time in the head feeding the fishes while I (boater for life in ME and MD, never done any real diving) ate nachos and drank beer. I video taped the whales and you can hear in the background the announcer say over and over “there’s our whale” and my wife say faintly with her hand over her mouth “I’ll be back” over and over. When we got back I was the hero because I got the whales on tape and I took the ride like a walk in the park while most on the boat very sick. They even canceled the third trip because of complaints from the first cruise. We did the second and when they came off the boat the first group didn't look to good but my wife and I looked at each other and said “tourists”. She would later regret those words and now if there is any question about anything on the water I have the trump card with “there’s our whale” with those words I usually win. Oh ya I forgot to mention it was our honeymoon. Those three word were the best wedding present that just keeps on giving a man could get.<br /> I have to say I was so used to the rolling that when I got back on land it took a half-hour or so before I didn't feel land sick.

Thats funny, while fishing this weekend, we saw a Whale too.<br /><br />Unfortunately she was riding in a Bayliner.

That had to be a great trip after seeing humpbacks!!! you went out on the best day of the summer because most whale watch boats are not seeing the humpbacks!!! Most days this summer that have been only getting a glimpse at minkes & and finbacks which don't stay on the surface long!!!<br /><br />It's nice to see the humpbacks breeching and feeding on the surface!!!!

We were out off of Jefferies, and we saw the "Miss Cape Ann" which calls Gloucester its home port I believe They were feeding pretty heavily, the water was thick with little silver baitfish, sand eels maybe

I guess these come south from the North Pole.<br />Here we get them coming north from the South Pole, and they are the Big fellows.<br />But what is really unique, is that there is an albeno (pure white) one. It travels our coast every year, and actually has a name. I understand they have their calf's on our coast.<br />Whale watching is a sizable industry here. I often wonder if the ones that we see pass are the same ones the New Zealanders watch going up their Coast Lines.<br />Cheers<br />Phillip
