So we toddles down to Batemans Bay looking forward to some fishing and clowning around, we launch the boat no probs here, I prestarted it on the ramp before dropping it in the drink, loaded it up and off we go Im thinking Hmmmm this aint going real quick and why is it not coming of the plane tacho is showing 2800 flat out, this isnt right so we turn back I beached it at the ramp popped the engine cover off and theres a plug lead off, couple cable ties later were off and its fairly screaming at a tad over 5000 RPM much better, stop a little ways up the Clyde and sat about drifting with the tide hoping to snare a flatty or two, was getting a little close to the oyster plots nearby so fired it up to move, same prob wont rev over about 3000 and wouldnt come off the plane so back in again we went I was royally cheesed off by now and decided to call it quits for the day pulled her up on the trailer popped the plugs and shes holding about 80 litres of sea water in the bilge.

I narrowed the leak down to the crappy little plastic pieces the plugs screw into, had a further issue with the trim not operating when running but u can stop and when idling it will raise and lower fine, it had a creeping issue but after a blee dof the hydraulics its not creeping, not being able to trim it is a pain in the bum, anyway I drove around the Bay and found an open boat shop got some new plugs and chromed brass bases and some silicone I changed the plug sin the Hotel carpark, bled the tilt hydraulics, fitted new spark plugs, checked the gear box oil, put it in Satdy morning, no better no power over 3000 RPM and the volts gauge is only showing 12.5Volts at cruise, not good. I doubt its the regulator, its running a car battery of about 380CCA, I know car batterys in boats are a no no as outboards need a deep cycle battery with high amp hours, could this be affecting the power output? could there still be air entering the fuel system and the not being able to trim the motor biz at cruise? any ideas ? I have bought a bilge pump and flipper switch to activate it, we still got some water out of it after replacing the plugs so Im guessing theres a split somewhere I looked at the rubber strips on the trailer skids and there hard as rock so maybe its rubbed through the hull above the the skids Ive had this happen once before with old Pride hull, so Ive got some work to do, appreciate any advice on the other issues with it.

Check out the hole ign.system for bad connections, distributercap for carbone or bad hightensionleads specally at the cap and the sparkplugs. Loose of power can be ign.problems. If you have a timinglight with a pickup, check for spark at all cyl. when you are running it under load.

Do a compression test too.
A car battery is fine for a starting battery.
One of mine is a 450CCA and the other is a 650CCA
If it's used as a trolling motor then it needs a deep cycle.
The thru hulls sometimes come loose and allow water in.
I found I was taking water in,couldn't figure it out.
The drain for the baitwell had loosened about a half turn.
Barley noticable, but enough to ship LOTS of water.

Re: What A Weekend LOL

My boat has a self draining well for the outboard or I should say it did have, someone has plated the self draining ports with alloy and small drain plugs fitted, there is also a small drain hole just under the outboard in the well, it doesnt drain from there no more as the powertilt unit on the motors seems to foul it, guessing Ill fill it permanently, it has another self draining port in the fwd anchor well doubt its this one letting the sea in, the problem is somewhere at the back, thinking Ill lift the motor off, jack the boat up off the trailer and have a real good look at the hull, Ill find it sooner or later, If I have too Ill drill a hole in the floor and fill it with water and look for the leak that way

Ive swapped the el cheapo car battery of 380 CCA for the big 780CCA 14 plater out of my old bus, see how this goes, Ive changed the tank fittings so may have stopped the leak there, still lots to check, off to look at the filter on the motor and check the hose for cracks , the leak is vexing but im liking the blocked of self draining transom well fittings for the leak, Ill put the plugs in it and fill the well with water and see if any drains out the lower plugs.

The splash well drain cant drain theres a great big chunk of marine ply fitted to the transom it seems to block this off, the way the boats been done is someone has fitted a large box at the back in the middle with a seat either side, the wells been modified so its a dry well, why i dont know, anyway we have spark, Im going to order new plug leads there dodgey as and 72 dated so well due for a change, i fitted new spark plugs on the weekend, Ill drop the dizzy cap and have a look in there too.
Hull is a Nautiglass V16 cuddy cabin, motor looks to be a 72 Chrysler 70HP with MagnaPower motor could be later then 72 though

Re: What A Weekend LOL

I spoke to the mechanic at the Bay who rebuilt the motor he said the engine has done little work since overhaul, I have to question just what they determine a reco to be, to me a reco is a total nut and bolt job, youd expect a new dizzy cap, timing belt and plugs and leads for your money, you get what you pay for I guess.

Think I found the leak theres two places on the keel that look like they have been scraped hard on rocks etc just under the V where the keel starts is a bad one and right at the back under the stern directly below the plugs is a another rub through thats wet, Ill sand these back and stick a few layers of glass over them and try again, the res tof the keel and hull look fine.

Re: What A Weekend LOL

I found a supplier of Chrysler bits here in OZ, just 20 bux for new fuwel pump diaphram and gasket and new lead with new plug is 15 bux cant complain about that, can complain about the regulator at nearly 1000 bux, there will be a way around the regulator, doubt my fuel pumps ever been serviced since new, looks like its never been off so might be worth changing. When I was down the coast I met the mechanic who rebuilt the motor and he gave me a heap of spares, I inherited 3 carbys of an 85, a spare power pack, coil, dizzy with leads another prop and the original bimini top of my boat that was left behind.

Re: What A Weekend LOL

Found the main offender with the leaks, could still see the sea water dripping out of the crack, its the lift strakes right at the front of the hull, worn thin from sand beaching I guess, easily fixed hopefully she will be dry now, time to cut hole and wack in the bilge pump
