What all is involved in physically replacing a 3.0 Merc?

I have a lead on a whole boat with a low hour 3.0 and rebuilt Alpha One.

I am going to swap motors with mine and have a few questions. I've swapped motors in cars, so I understand somewhat what to expect, but the marine world is pretty different.

How does the outdrive connect to the motor? A Bellhousing style connection? Do I have to remove the outdrive for any reason to pull the engine? Do I need any specialized tools to remove anything?

Any help would be great. Obviously the PDF manual I have will help me as well, but I thought, if anyone can prepare me for anything I may not be expecting, please do!

Thanks

1. Pull off the outdrive -- you'll need to unbolt the 6 nuts on the top of your outdrive and undo the trim rams (one bolt)

2. Undo the two bolts that mount the rear of the engine (flywheel housing)

3. Undo the 4 bolts that mount the front of the engine

4. unplug the wiring harness and any other wires that may not go to the harness (like battery wires)

Pull engine

Align the engine before reinstalling the outdrive

Service manual for you (click on the table of contents where it says "GM In-line"

It's not exactly a breeze, but there really are only like 13 bolts + wires and you can pull the engine.

A couple of suggestions for while you have the engine out..
1. Add a oil drain hose to your oil pan, that will make future oil changes easier.

2. You know how you have to undo your front motor mount to change your belt? Buy an extra belt and to ahead and wrap it in there so that if you need to change a belt, you have an extra one there and don't have to remove the mount..

Do I need to drain the outdrive oil prior to removing the outdrive? I'm not sure if its all sealed or what.

No you dont have to drain the oil BUT if it hasnt beenchanged in a while now would be the time to do it.
