got 76 evinrude that i could not get running until member from here helped me out.(joe reeves) he sent me a rebuild kit, but before i even got it i messed with what i had. i've soaked this thing and put it back together. it ran great in the barrel. took it to the lake and it quit. had fuel setting at the choke flapper. took it apart again and started over joe has explained everything from the float setting to how to adjust the s/s valve. took it back to lake again, this time my plugs looked black as coal after about 30 minutes of trying it out. i got the rebuild kit yesterday put it in and i keep getting the fuel laying at the front of carb again. the only way i can get it running is to pull choke to about half way out. then it still wont run long.i've been working with joe on his personal e-mail account. but i dont want to be a bother to him. just looking for advice. everything just seems to point to the float or the s/s needle valve. i've double checked my fuel mixture. i can spray fuel on the plugs and put them back in and it will crank up and purr like a kitten. then it dies, by the way its a 1976 9.9 evinrude.

Greg ; You have a fuel problem. Lack of it, Start at the carb remove the fuel line with the tank hooked on blow air back to the tank (remove the tank cap so you can hear the air comming back to the tank). If no compresser use canned air(PC keyboard blower)Start there then see if that helped. If not email.
Red !! debraal@vbe.com

Greg..... If pumping the fuel primer bulb corrects the problem, you have a faulty fuel pump. If pumping the fuel primer bulb makes no difference, you're overlooking something in that carburetor. The brass fixed high speed jet in the bottom of that carb, the one that screws upwards into the bottom section of the upper body could still be clogged along with the passageways you'll see when it's removed.

The fuel laying in front of the carb puzzles me. If when pumping that fuel primer bulb, fuel flows out the front of the carb, the float level is set wrong.
