Got a 30 yr old BW Sport 13. Took the steering console, wheel, pulleys and rope off so my then little boy could row and play around a little lake we often weekended at. It still works good with a 8 hp ob for fishing nearby lakes, smaller rivers and flooded reclaimed strip mines.

I am thinking about cleaning it up and reinstalling steering gear to turn it back into the Sport 13 it was born as. Add a 40 hp ob and I got a nice little boat to drag to FL in winter and Northwoods in summer for fishing and messing around.

Is there a later and greater steering system to upgrade the pully and ropes it came with 30 years ago? Please comment fully. What are the advantages something different would give me?

Your recommendations and thoughts, please.

I would just put back the cable and pulley system, but that's just my opinion.
Others will disagree, but they are Momma's boys :D

Anyway, this one might work:

I would seriously try to call customer service at Teleflex to see if that particular one might work.
You might also try posting over at continuouswave.com , as I'm sure that many have done the conversion.

Here's a post from over at continuouswave.com, the BW forum:

"I replaced the pulley steering on my 1962 13 Sport with Teleflex steering several years ago. It was an easy installation that required hand tools and a drill. Here are my recommendations:
-Install the Teleflex No Feedback with the rotary helm. The "rack" system Teleflex offers probably won't fit your console.
-Measure carefully for your cable length. Distances seem to vary from transom to console on older 13 Sports. Mine required a 9' cable that was not offered in a boxed kit. My local boat shop graciously replaced the stock 10' cable with a 9' cable.
-If you have the original white steering wheel with the chrome bezel, it may not fit the Teleflex helm. I had to replace both.
-If you have a 15" shaft OB mounted on the transom, you will probably have to mount standoff brackets(available from Westmarine). These are not needed if you have a 20" shaft OB installed using lift plates. "

The installation took only a few hours. I had to drill several holes in the top and starboard side of the wooden console to accomodate the Teleflex helm and cable. I love the steering system and have had no problems with it.

If you want to do it and be done with it go with the Teleflex NFB system, alot more reliable than cable pulley and way less complicated and safer to boot.

Ayuh,... Top of the line is stand alone Full Hydraulic Steering,... Probably overkill for your boat though...
