What are these wires and how does my spedo work?

Pulled my stern drive to check bellows etc. These wires are lose on both sides. Seem like some type of ground wires? Can't see any natural spot they would attach. Also I don't seem to have any type of tube or anything for a spedo it's an older model and 85 boat, how would my speedo work? Cause it currently does not work. Oh my trim gauge does not work either and I'm wondering if the wires are related. Any help appreciated!

Pre-‘86 is pre-Apha, so that should be a MR drive.
Wires are for trim control; there is no speedo port on MR drives so you’d need to have a stern mounted pitot and run small vinyl tubing to the helm.

Would the wires actually go? My helmet has a sped but it doesn't work so maybe it never did? I don't care about that too much cause my FF has GPS but the trim gauge would be nice so I don't always have to go peek where it's at

The wires are for the trim gauge and or limit switch. Common they get brittle and break. By gen one alp h drive had a separate pito on the transom for the Speedo. Mor often than not speedos don’t work …
