What are these wires coming from my shifter and what do they go to?

There's2 wires coming from the back of my shifter. Both fairly long, approximately 5 feet long. And both red. I've searched and searched, but can't find anything.

Just about all the throttle/shift quadrants have had neutral safety switches since the 50's

Yes they will be for the neutral safety switch and typically the common colors are Yellow with a Red stripe but some manufacturers added different colors such as red and yellow, etc.

Thanks for the responses. I'll take off the shifter and check it out after work.

Ayuh,.... Just meter the wires,....

It should be a closed circuit in neutral, 'n an open circuit in gear,....

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not sure exactly what you mean, bondo. I'm new to wiring.. I've visited a million websites and read a million threads to learn how to hook up my guages and ignition. I have learned quite a bit and things are making more sense now than when I first started, but still get confused at times. When you say meter the wires, I assume one runs to positive, and one to negative? Thank you for your help bondo.

Yeah. Just get a cheap multi-meter, place it in the OHMs or resistance setting and connect to the switch wires.

CLOSED will indicate as LOW resistance, (less than 1 OHM) and OPEN will indicate as very high resistance. (several M ohms [mega-ohms])

When you are in neutral, the switch should indicate CLOSED and OPEN in FWD/REV

You are testing for continuity. For example, a light switch in your house....when the light is on, the switch is considered closed. When the light is off, the switch is considered open.
Those wires from your control go through a switch. One into the switch and one out of the switch.
