What are white plastic filters in tote tank tops?

What is the white filter tube thing that sits in my tote tank opening, screwed down by the breather/lid?

its a yamaha. its like a plastic round mesh cylinder.

im use to inboards, we downsized for function so im learning as i go.

That filter is to keep trash from getting out of the tank and attacking you while you fill.
