Having a discussion on another site about starting the engine for a few seconds after it's pulled out of the water to get rid of any water left in the motor to keep it from freezing. Not sure if it's anywhere else on the board here or not. Thanks.

Not needed if you're talking outboards.....2 seconds will start to burn an impellor out of the water.
Outboards are built to drain completely within minutes in the down position.

A vertical outboard will drain long before water has time to freeze (like Kenny said). More problems from water mixed in the lower unit oil occur. Good to drain and replace LU oil before storing during winter months.

Well, if you want more opinions, Harker, here's mine.

I agree exactly with Walleyehed.

Not needed to drain the water and dangerous to the impeller.

Good luck. :)

Don't start it!!!! Anyone who says, "It's ok for a couple of seconds", is gunna be confused with someone who says ..."It's ok for a half minute or so...." Or worse...!!! If in doubt, pull the emergency lanyard, and the crank the motor over... " Any captured water (and it can happen) will definatly be drained! BTW, I used to eat my lunch at Shilshoe Marina in Seattle, each day we would see this guy pull up the the launch in his 12' boat and remove his 10 hp and then start it up "dry", "Just to get all the water out of it!", he stated he NEVER had a water pump problem, wasn't gunna argue with him but we all knew he wasn't doing his motor any favors!! Also, remember that a water pump IS a mortality item. It should be replaced every..... few yearsz or so, if not sooner! Remember, the water helps lubricate the rubber impellor inside the stainless housing! Lack of water means additional heat and heat damage!! Sand, minerals and air intrusion = lack of water!!

Re: What are your thoughts

Pee tube may be clogged.....small piece of wire carefully pushed up "may" let it flow. You may have to remove the hose and blow it out in the direction of travel.
May need a T-stat replaced, and possibly an impellor if in doubt.

Isn't the water coming from the pee tube just excess cooling water?

Re: What are your thoughts

Pee hole is simply a visual confirmation that a minimum of cooling water is circulating.
