Okay I'm in search of a new battery that will not only start my engine but also run my vs player and 500w amp. I have a 17 foot winner escape, with a 3.0/4cyl OMC cobra. I want to be able to start it whenever but also play my stereo while anchored. Should I use a starting battery and a deep cell with a switch, or just run one dual purpose battery? I was thinking dual purpose was the best route, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions???

A stereo with a 500W amp could pull a small battery down in a short time. Would be cheaper with two batteries, but if you only want one then get a 4D marine deep cycle battery. Has enough power to turn your 3L over and will last long enough. Only issue is it weights 124 pounds and cost around 500

The problem everybody has with using one battery for everything is the possibility of not having enough juice left over after using it for so many other things at the end of the day and wanting to boat back in. Two batteries is the sensible answer, but you could also install a battery monitoring circuit to announce when it reaches a certain limit of available power left. But then your engine has to be in top condition so you don't have to crank for very long to get it running or you're screwed as well... Such a circuit works much like a low fuel indicator to let you know when a certain limit is left. Just an idea...

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... If ya wanta be able to start the motor, whenever ya want,....

Go with a dual battery option,.....

Otherwise, regardless the battery, someday, it ain't gonna start, because the stereo killed the battery,.....

Whenever you add a high power consumption accessory such as a big amp or a trolling motor, especially an accessory that draws a lot of power over a long period of time, you are automatically in dual battery territory. This means a dual battery switch or ACR setup as well. And don't stop there because a short hop back to the cabin, marina, or ramp will not fully charge either battery so an on-board dual bank charger that you plug into shore power or house power is necessary to keep the batteries topped off after and between uses. You definitely want a deep cycle for the high power side of the switch and whatever lights your fire for the engine starting duties. As the old saying goes, you cannot have too much battery power but you can definitely have too little.
