Right now I have an 18' boat with a 140hp outboard. I'm wondering what type of battery I should buy. right now there are not a lot of electronics or a trolling motor hooked up. Eventually down the road more electronics and a 12 volt trolling motor will be added, but for now I just need a battery for starting and my navigation lights. Should I just buy a starter battery? Thanks

I run the optima blue top batteries in my boat I have one for the starting and two for the trolling motor. there a little more expensive but ive had mine for 6 years and they still are strong you dont want to hook the trolling motor when you get 1 to the starting battery they should be kept separate. Also the optima charge real fast.

Walmart Marine Maxx batteries are great value and Walmart has a great warranty. My last batteries lasted seven years. I keep them on a float charge whenever not on the water. I use a Group 29 Marine Max for starting.

When you purchase a trolling motor, you should get a separate, deep cycle battery for the trolling motor. Deep cycle batteries are made for a high drain and to be recharged many times from a 50% charge.

Vandy, A single 24 series marine starting battery will handle starting that motor. You need a separate deep cycle battery for the troling motor. As you add electronics and want to run them with the engine off, you will want to graduate to a single 27 series marine starting battery.
