89-90hp johnson...been having lots of problems with no spark on 1 bank, then it went too good spark on all 4, then it went too weak spark on all 4,I put on a new powerpack and it made no diffrence.. an now the power pack is dead...The stator has 180 volts, ohms are 530 while connected too power pack...the timer base has 43 ohms an 1.7 volts but I had too disconnect the power pack too test, the powerpack is shorted out. the coils had 159-172 volts on all 4 before the power pack went out..I test the kill wire for a short and power an it is good, no voltage at all on wire.I pulled the flywheel and everything there looks good.I have a new powerpack but really neverous about hooking it up.All the wires look good nothing seems too be rubbing anywhere, not sure where too look next. I tested stator and timerbase wires too ground and nothing is shorted out:confused:........

Stator and timer base are testing within spec, the only thing left is a short in the wiring harness or a bad coil.

Did you try heating up the components under the flywheel to test, sometimes heat will show you different readings.

Re: what blew my powerpack (maybe found something

well I took all 4 coils off too have a real good look, and they didn't seem too look too bad.Trying too come up with something I tried too find something that was not the same on each coil so I used my OHM tester and touch the plug wire connector an the power pack conn. and got a reading( diffrent every time I touch it) that lasted about 1 sec., got too coil 3 and got no reading at all, then I touch the power pack conn. too the coil itself and got a reading on all 4 coils, then I tried it with the plug wire conn. and # 3 coil was the only coil that had no reading at all. Is this a bad coil,if so I plan on changing all 4 coils as I did have no spark on 1 bank an then had weak spark on all 4..just seems strange all 4 coils at the same time, but motor had been sitting for a few years.............EDIT...recheck everything again an found out I had the ohm tester on the wrong setting(the reson I got a reading for a split sec.)...power pack conn. all coils have .5 ohms...plug wire conn. 3 coils have 260 ohms an 1 coil # 3 has zero reading.I take it this the bad coil an the reason my power pack blew.....

They look ok to me in the pic. I have some in far worse shape on a 150 that still fire.

Sounds like you found the issue, a bad coil will take out a powerpack, powerpacks like providing voltage not getting it back!
