Hi there, this is my first post ever on a forum. I'd like to start off by saying this looks to be a very good site, with a lot of quality information. Im in the market for a new boat, and ive selected a few brands that intrest me, and are available in my area. #1Glastron sx175 4.3L ski&fish, or just sx175.#2 Reinell 180. or 185 ski&fish. #3 Campion Allante 545i.#4Invader V-180F&S. And one from seaDoo caught my eye, Utopia 185 with a 200 hp optimax. Im wondering if I can get some feedback on some of these boats, like are they any good? which one would you buy? any quality problems I should be aware of? I would be using this boat for fishing, as well as pulling a tube and waterskiing, plus something the wife will like, as she will not be caught dead in my 14ft aluminum. I live in Alberta Canada, so basically the only water its gonna see is lake use. Some other concerns I have: Is inboard/outboard a good choice? the seaDoo... do the jets plug up easily? for instance, if i drove through some weeds would i be hooped? The vehicle i will be pulling with is a jeep grande cherokee 4.0L, im thinking it will be fine for towing any of these boats, hopefully. One mre thing... which engine is better Volvo or mercruiser? any information you can supply me about these boats would be very much appreciated, and thank you in advance. P.S the 14ft Aluminum will be going bye bye.

Why kill yourself on price? Just stick with the Campion or Invader. The Jeep will be too small.

Kelly Cook

Re: what boat is right for me?

Well, just checking my post after a couple days, seems like not too many people have much to say about any of these boats, rather dissapointing. Thanxs though Kcook, although brief. I will be checking into invader boats, heading out tomorrow to the city to check around.

Hey. You certainly make use of the space here. Within a few lines you manage to ask for all we know plus a few things that really are a matter of taste.

I suggest you do a little more homework. Look closely on the boats and decide for yourself which finish, detail, design specialities etc. you like better. Volvo or Merc - some like one, some the other. If there is a good and reliable service point nearby, any could be good. Personally I like Merc better, also because of their outdrives. Maintenance is what it's about both regarding boat an motor, no matter the make.

To my taste the Reinell is out, the Glastron is nice but 'heavy', the Campion is good value (and Canadian). I find some Campion designs oldish and it lacks some smart design details. The 545i is better, just resembles a fridge inside. Pretty 'cold'.

I like outbords better than in/outboard because one of these once caught fire under the floor and almost killed me. Removing/replacing an outboard is easier. Any leaks or fuel drops are outside closed cavities. Jet drives tend to drink plenty fuel.

At the end of the day it is your decision and your money. Remember to look for special offers.

Just my 2 cents :)

Re: what boat is right for me?

really only you can answer that question.
-
the ideal boat is one that you would be happy with. but make sure its one that you can put in & retrieve, along with handle yourself.
-
if it was me i would go with a dual purpose boat.
one that looks good for the wife and kids- but has the amenities for fishing.
-
the other is how available are the boat parts in your area. if something breaks or falls off.
-
what ever it is check it out good before you buy and have fun.
-
the jeep gr. cherokee tows my buddies 21ft pontoon like there is nothing back there.

Living in Canada you have to contend with freezing. For that reason I would be thinking outboard. You have to be very careful to drain all of the water out of an I/O powered boat. With an outboard just make sure that the engine is verticle when it gets cold.

Re: what boat is right for me?

Thanxs, that was more the kinda info I was looking for. And you are correct I should do more homework for myself, hey, I thought posting in a forum like this was a good research tool, and I was right. Thanxs all, hopefully going with the wife to look at boats tomorrow. Now im getting excited. I thought Glastron seemed kinda light for under 2000lbs sx175?, maybe im wrong? I think im kinda partial to mercruiser myself, but im still thinking i might just go for an outboard, although I like the clean look of the inboard/outboard. Well Im sure after going to a few dealers and seeing the boats upclose, rather than on the internet will greatly help my decision. Thanxs again, this site rox...

The outboard vs I/O debate has come up many times on all the message boards. Here is one of the better discussions -

Inboard vs. Outboard

Kelly

Re: what boat is right for me?

Well, I think I have my mind just about made up on what boat to go with. I went and saw a few of the models I was interested in. The Campion, the Invader, and the Reinell. Now I have to say all these boats look great to me, and actually all fall into about the same price range, with the Campion and Invader being slightly less. The invader looks more cheaply made in my opinion than the other 2 boats, the finish doesnt look as nice, the paint scheme looks tacky and the back end is a little bit goofy to try and open up, to get at the motor, so I crossed that boat off. All 3 boats are being sold with Volvo 4.3 L 190HP. The Reinell boat he had was a 185 which is a little longer boat than the Campion, so i guess that explains the price increase, although you cant really tell any difference when sitting in the boats. I felt pretty limited by the Reinell dealer, because he only had 2 boats to pick from one yellow , and one black, with the 185 being the smallest he had, plus it would take quite a few months to get one from their factory up here to Canada. Now I went to the Campion dealer, and he has more selection, the boat I looked at there was the Allante 535i BR. Very nice boat, and as I recall someone said it looked like a fridge inside, and I would have to agree, the stainless steel kinda look does remind you of a fridge, but it looks really nice to me, guess I like fridges :) . I never did get to look at the Glastron, the damn dealer shut his doors at 1 oclock in the afternoon. What kinda boat dealer works from 9am to 1pm? The Campion has 16 degrees Deadrise, is that good? The dealer said that he had the same model up to 50Mph, which was faster than the reinell. That wasn't a huge deal to me, personally I think anything over 40mph in a boat is pretty decent, but why not get the most bang for your buck? Well I think just talking about it has solidified my choice, and I think i'll be cruisin the lake in the Campion, I also say to hell with Glastron, I drove to the city once to look at all dealers, guess that'll teach him for only working for 4 hours. One dealer said that their warranty claims had dropped by 70% by selling their boats with Volvo, as opposed to selling with Mercruiser as they had previously. Im thinking Volvo must sell a decent motor because they seemed really popular in Alberta. The Campion has 3-TEX dimensional fibreglass, what the hell is that exactly? and is it good? they also were saying they have Kevlar in the keel of the boat, which to me sounds good, maybe it really is a bulletproof choice? :) . Well I guess im just rambling now, but damn they are nice boats, and its just exciting to contemplate having one.

P.S the Campion also has really comfy bucket seats, and a Clarion CD player ! Bye for now, and thanxs for your help, im sure ill have more to say once I own a new boat

Re: what boat is right for me?

The Boat choice is fine. The tow vehicle is good. But I would think the motor over one last time. I now have a I/O and my boating year is shorter because of it. When I had my outboard rig I went out whenever I wanted. But I like the I/O beter for family reasons, less smoke (old 2 stroke on mine)and maintence(wasn't all that bad). You will like whatever you get no doubt. Enjoy summers here!

Re: what boat is right for me?

16 deg of deadrise is typical for boats this size. The fast offshore rigs have a lot more deadrise, but that is a whole different design envelope. I wouldn't sweat the deadrise here.

Almost any of the 18 footers with the standard 4.3L will get into the high 40s. Faster than that and you really want a bigger boat anyhoo.

Sorry to say I have never had a chance to see a Campion for myself. But various sources on these message boards leave me with the impression that they are better built than the other brands you were considering. Good pick!

I just boosted up another thread with a good discussion on the Merc vs Volvo deal -

Newbe needs INFO on first boat purchase

Personally I prefer Merc in this size,
Kelly

BurnttoastCanuck
Hey Bud
Now that you seem to have made your choice I'll throw this in about Campion. The boat manufacture totally stands behind and supports the dealers that sell thier boats. In the early 90's we sold a lot of them which also meant we boated a lot of them. You will be happy with the choice... merc vrs volvo.. who cares.. if your sales person is on the ball, they will call you in about two years figuring you need to upgrade a couple feet and then you will have a another new warrenty :)
Lets us know how it turns out!

Happy Boating
Link

Nice... now you've gone through it and know much more about it. You are facing the undescribeable joy of getting a brand NEW boat (a dream to many here).

If you look after it and keep it according to the manual you definately will have years of fun.
