Well just coming towards the end of my project and having replaced the transom I am loathe to start firing screws through it !!!!
I want to put aluminium plate on the transom ....Whats the best way to do it and what to use????
As always all help appreciated and acted upon.

k1ngad,

Maybe a better description of what you are doing with the alum. Are you covering the whole transom?.. part of it?....under motor bracket?...transducer mount?.That would give some an idea of the usage to help you. Good luck.

Is the motor small enough to clamp on or does it use through bolts? If it is bolted, let the bolts that hold the motor on also hold the plate.

The motor clamps on, no through bolts so trying to keep the transom hole free with exception to the drain.

k1ngad,

Do you have the alum already fabricated? What is the thickness?

Is this being used to protect the transom from the motor and clamps...or....structural? If she were mine.... and the alum is used only for protection on the motor mount.. and made of a small gauge to snug up to transom with the motor clamps..I might as well seal it off from outside elements with my choice of material....maybe rubber...maybe 5200..choice will be up to you.

Ayuh,... In My experince, aluminum plate is not the Best choice for Clamp-on only motor mounting...
It's Too Slippery....
Thin plywood allows a much Better Bite....

The motor kickin' to the side in a corner is an Excitin' experince,.... Been there, done that....

I agree, aluminum looks good, but wood works better, you can also buy the rubber pads designed for this purpose.

Here are a couple pics of what I did. This is a low HP jon boat and I haven't had problems with the outboard slipping, but the aft side of the transom is bare plywood that the outboard is biting into. Also, if the outboard were to slip it's not going far since the aluminum cap is lipped over, it would catch and retain the outboard,,, on my boat. If the transom was flush, I would have cupped the aluminum plate so the clamps were retained in the holes.

They sell pre-made plates like you are asking about.

Oh yeah,,, I wouldn't glue this on, seal up the fasteners with 3m5200.

I use a piece of mud flap from an 18 wheeler.....Its tough, absorbs vibration, and if you can find a decent used one..probably ...FREE!!!!! If not, single new ones are not that expensive and will last for years.......I put mine on w/ Liquid Nails...works fine!!!
