Re: What brrand oil filter do you use?
Okay, a couple of things should be addressed here: 1) I'm not sure why you would want larger filter media micron rating to allow more dirt to pass through the filter. A filter may cause more restriction because of its higher efficiency, but I will guarantee that quality filters will not collapse under those conditions. Fram will flow more oil, but I've changed oil on thousands of 350 merc's and some equipped with Fram have had the inside of the filter media collapse because of poor manufacturing with inferior products. Their media is cardboard and their bypass spring is cardboard.
Second, your oil filter's bypass valve does not open at higher pressure, it opens at lower pressure to ensure the bearings, journals and cam lobes all get oil. The higher the pressure, the more oil is forced through the filter and the better, more efficient oil filter you should have in order to keep that oil clean and those bearings and journals happy. My personal boat runs 70psi oil pressure at 195* oil temp running at 3000 rpm(1999 merc mag350 mpi) with 295.5 hours and Torco 20w-50 weight oil. I run only Baldwin filters at my shop and reccommend only Baldwin, even over OEM.
If your running 40wt and your oil temp is only 140*, switch to at least 30wt because your oil system is not being protected. A properly filtered oil system will be able to withstand heat within its required oil weight range and should be changed every 6 months or 100 hours AFTER changing the break in oil at 25 hours.
Don't run FRAM.
