My omc cobra has a remote oil filter that the cross to fit it is a 35-802885T Merc.filter,of which is what I have used everytime I change the filter..I understand from the oil filter test that this the common filter for the gm remote filters.I have a lot of room and would like to put a more readly avalible filter on it that is maybe a longer filter. So those of you that have the remote filters that can use this filter, what is the filter you use?I was thinking of using a NAPA GOLD if I can cross it.

I wouldn't use the napa gold in the boat. It is a WIX filter and the 1086 flows less than half as much as the standard Merc filter:

http://www.oilfilterstudy.com/Grease Oil Filter Study.xls

Save the WIX for the car and get yourself a Hastings, Purolator Premium Plus (not the Pure One -- save that one for the car too), or K&N.

Here's more reading: www.OilFilterStudy.com

Thanks garycinn
I have read both of those many of times, and saw the 35-802885T mentioned once. What I was asking for was cross numbers to that paticular number.Maybe I'm confused with the study.I can walk in to our local parts houses and tell them I want number #### made by Wix but in say k&N brand and they can get it for me.They just can't find many crosses to the merc. number.

The WIX 51086 or the Napa 1086 crosses to the Merc filter. Fram PH6606 is also a cross to the Merc. So is the Baldwin B360.

Be careful about taking a cross ref of a cross ref. Look at the original specs and make sure threads, ADBV, by-pass, etc. match up. Even then you don't know if the flow and filtration map up.

If you have the room, go for the slightly larger format in the study in the 3 or 4 recommended models.

The GM MerCruisers come with AC's from the factory. My personal preference is the high-end Purolator.

phil,if the Merc filter isn't readily available, just buy more than one at a time.
You can use any filter that will screw on,but how much money will you save, and what chances are you taking?
I cannot prove Merc or OMC (BRP) products are better. But I do know they work, and are reccommended.
I just don't see a big savings going elsewhere. How many filters do you use a year?

DHP

Here's a test you can do "at home" to show that the Merc filter flows better than the garden variety car filter.

Pour the same oil into the Merc filter and an AC filter -- or WIX, Fram, etc that is in www.oilfilterstudy.com that shows lower flow.

You will notice that the Merc filter will take oil much faster because it is seeping through the filter medium at a faster rate -- i.e. more flow because of larger pore size.

Garycinn:

I couldnt have said it better myself.

You do not want a restrictive filter on a boat engine, thus the reason not to use the Pureone by purolator. Although a great filter IMHO for your normal car engine, it doesnt flow as well as a K&N at say 4,500 RPM. Plus, if you are using a 40 weight at 140 degrees,  You just may be bypassing most of your oil.

Thanks everybody
That was what I wanted to here.My reason for asking was a fried runs a NAPA store and said he could get me what ever filter I wanted but said the NAPA GOLD filter was better,I tried to argue with him on it but was on the lossing end.
Is the Serria filter as good as merc? Anyone.
DHPMARINE: I use 2 oil filters a year.1 at end of season and 1 midway thru summer.Probably overkill but that is what I do.

Re: What brrand oil filter do you use?

Okay, a couple of things should be addressed here: 1) I'm not sure why you would want larger filter media micron rating to allow more dirt to pass through the filter. A filter may cause more restriction because of its higher efficiency, but I will guarantee that quality filters will not collapse under those conditions. Fram will flow more oil, but I've changed oil on thousands of 350 merc's and some equipped with Fram have had the inside of the filter media collapse because of poor manufacturing with inferior products. Their media is cardboard and their bypass spring is cardboard.
Second, your oil filter's bypass valve does not open at higher pressure, it opens at lower pressure to ensure the bearings, journals and cam lobes all get oil. The higher the pressure, the more oil is forced through the filter and the better, more efficient oil filter you should have in order to keep that oil clean and those bearings and journals happy. My personal boat runs 70psi oil pressure at 195* oil temp running at 3000 rpm(1999 merc mag350 mpi) with 295.5 hours and Torco 20w-50 weight oil. I run only Baldwin filters at my shop and reccommend only Baldwin, even over OEM.
If your running 40wt and your oil temp is only 140*, switch to at least 30wt because your oil system is not being protected. A properly filtered oil system will be able to withstand heat within its required oil weight range and should be changed every 6 months or 100 hours AFTER changing the break in oil at 25 hours.
Don't run FRAM.

Using Fram, on 5.0 Mercruiser. I don't keep them on long enough to notice any performance issues. Used on my autos for years.

Re: What brrand oil filter do you use?

i just use oem in both my toys. oil and filter. seems to me that the manufacture probably knows what they want for their engine. i don't know about flows and amount of holes to let dirt pass by. i don't need to know. oem knows. i may have an advantage over some though. i have both merc and yamaha dealers within a mile or so of me, so the parts are easy for me to get... my 2 cents worth. jim
