Re: what car motor matches the aq 125a

The AQ125A is the volvo 2.1L mated with a carburetor instead of the auto version with fuel injection from the same year.

The AQ125B is the volvo 2.3L. Same carb setup as with the A model and all the add-on parts like fuel pumps and spark plug wires are the same for all of these motors.

My AQ125A calls for different plugs than the auto version, so double check the numbers if you are using auto parts.

Started off life as a B21 that would be similar to what you would find in late 70's to early 80's 2 series Volvo sedans, coupes, and wagons. If you go to the link that Sqbtr posted, you will see it's a bit of a process to adapt one to marine life. It will get extra expensive if you choose to use factory Volvo Penta cooling parts, say if perhaps your original engine does not have salvageable pieces.

Thanks for the help. I have a 1983 bayliner with a bad damper couple and bad rear bearing so dont I fix what I have or try the car motor. And can you remove the motor with taking the lower unit off. I never worked on a boat before this is my first boat. The boat is in great shape.

Are you talking about the drive coupler that bolts to the flywheel and the primary drive shaft bearing?

If so, A new engine would do nothing to fix either problem.

That's for sure.

Why don't you tell us the rest of the story. It sound like you have some bad/mis info...

I wouldn't buy any more parts until you have a chance to look things over. Boats can get quite expensive depending on what is needed.

You could start by pulling the upper gear box off the outdrive. this link shows how to do that.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095

once you remove the upper, you can begin to asses the overall condition of the outdrive. The upper has to be removed to pull the engine anyway.

here is a service manual for your engine. Thanks to Don S for the manual links.

I'm assuming you have a 270 outdrive...

That should get you started,

Pics say a thousand words, so don't hold back the pics.

Ok I took my boat to a marina and did not remove the lower unit to take the motor out but they did find the problem it was the drive coupler a spring came of the couler plate and was getting hung up in there new coupler was put on and motor runs fine. Now my ? is about the lower unit all the post on here stated you had to remove it to get the motor out but this marina said no so what do I have to look forward to. Whats going to happen when I put it in the water.

Glad to hear you found the bad spring.

Re: the upper gear box removal. It is typically removed on an annual basis as part of your routine maintenence. I realize the engine can be removed without removing it, but as it is a regular mainenence item, it would have been a good idea to pull it anyway. However since your paying a mechanic, it's up to you.

What about the bad rear bearing you mentioned? If that bearing is bad, it would have been much easier to do with the engine out. I realize some folks say you can change the bearing with the engine in the boat, but its more difficult and you can't replace the inner grease seal without the engine out.

So, now its up to you. If the rear bearing is in fact bad, if it fails and damages the flywheel cover, you'll be pulling the engine again. Personnally, I would pull the upper gear box as suggested before and inspect.
