yesterday i took my boat out. at first it didnt wanna start then it started up. eveything looked ok so i went i felt a sudden loss of power and when i looked back i saw a lot of steam coming out the back(i thought it was smoke) switched it off immediately and took it out the water. at home i took out the plugs and found water on the middle cylinder. so i took the head off and found that the gasket went. now i want to know what happened???????? did my waterpump go and the heat made the gasket fail???????????? and if so what must i check now and service while im going to do these repairs to my motor. i checked the sleeves and pistons they all seem to be looking ok and also what can i do to make the motor to perform a little better(maybe take a little bit off the head) or is it a stupid idea. what else can i do to put up the prformance. it is a 1994 force 90 hp

G S,Would be very good if you gave us the year or model number. An overheat could have caused your head gasket failure.,and it could just be a spontanious failure.Check the head and block face for damage and warping with a good straight edge.
Get a service manual and replace the head gasket.
be careful to follow the torqing procedure.Change thermostat and water pump while you are at it
Dont mess with copmpression or other performance
alterations.Use your manual to be sure everything is tuned and adjusted correctly.Once your sure of tune etc. consider a prop change. You will need to know your present wot max rpm and your present prop pitch.Generally speaking less pitch gives better hole shot but less top end, more pitch
give more top end and less hole shot.Of course this all depends on where you are at now.
Im not an expert but after your sure of tune and prop I would consider changing the reeds.Boysen reeds are supposed to improve performance.Dont Know cost or how difficult the install is.There is a web site.Im sure if you do a search on this forum there have been discussions on reeds.
Good luck.
