I just found one of my regulator/rectifiers was burnt up, what will cause this, and would this cause misfire at lower rpms? thanks guys. Tim.

I would bet the connectors on the yellow wires are burned. Heat from the overloaded connectors travels down the wire and takes out the regulator.

Lightly or intermittently loaded they do OK, but hang a decent music maker on it, or have a hard time starting the engine on a regular basis, and they overheat.

I replaced the connectors on mine last time I changed them out with soldered connections and it's held up well.

This was a frequent problem on some Suzuki 1500 Cruisers.. As said in another reply- the multi connector was the culprit ( mast spliced direct or went with individual connectors, AND an additional ground wire for added protection solved most guys problems.. Probably applies to boats as well.
Good luck.. Hope the reg/rec isn't expensive...

I have to agree with j_martin, solder connections on a boat are the only thing that holds up. Corrosion on crimp connections will cause all kinds of problems. Corrosion on the wires even makes soldering difficult. I use acid core solder when the wiring looks bad.
