I had to replace my fuel pump diaphram this past weekend. I'm wondering what would cause it to rip? could it be that the fuel filter putting a strain on the diaphram? bad parts? pumping primer bulb to much? bad parts?

Im asking because it hasn't been very long since i changed it out.

I would suspect a defective diaphragm, or maybe a backfire caught it just right. Hard to say, but I doubt that the fuel filter or squeezing the primer bulb too much would cause it to tear.

It hasn't backfired on me since i replaced the diaphram. I guess it was bad parts. I did notice 2 different types diaphrams though. The one that tore had some kind of cloth mesh in it. The new one that i put in didn't have that cloth mesh and it was more rubber so hopefully that one last longer.

The weird thing is that they have the same part numbers. So i guess its luck of the draw which one they send.

A backfire could do and it being torn can cause a backfire.Makes you say HUM????
Ethanol is a BIG problem with older rubber in diaphrams.J

Barb on a screw thread could start a tear. Pressure finishes it.

hey there... i dunno about yours but i decided to do some PM on mine and went down and bout a new diapham and it si made of the same rubbbery stuff you talked about.... Now the wierd thing is I Knew nothing of this engine so i tooc my cover of and the diaphram that was in it looked fine. I went to get a tool and came back and it had shriveld up and kinda looked like a Frito... and was very hard and stiff (keep it clean guys) anyway this is why i think it would have failed....

Like everything over time it wears out being soaked with fuel the hot cold age all destroy rubber so spend the 4 buck change it out and all is good ... i thinkim gonna do mine every years... Its cheap easy and 4 bucks i cheap insurance

mine didn't even last a year. I replaced it probably 3 months ago and it never backfired, it was brand new not a single mark on it. Still tore somehow. Thats why think it was bad parts also.
