Don't bother cleaning it, unless you have it totally torn down, in which case, gasoline is the cheapest cleaner. However (just a tip), I made a parts cleaner from a toyota fuel pump, and an old BBQ grill :D I use minral spirits as a cleaning fluid, and filter/reuse it over and over ...It's really shot by the time I drain and refill this thing.
Werks great :D

Careful what you subject the solenoids to. I would use dextron III. Don't use anything that will attack varnish (wire insulation)

Fill the LU with dextron. While running on a hose, put it through the gears several times. This will clean out most debris. If it doesn't, a tear down is needed.....

Bruce.... I use "Mineral Spirits" exclusively. I've found that it is quick cleaning, has a fast evaporation rate when drying parts with compressed air, and WILL NOT damage anything.
