What chevy motor is this?

I bought a used 1984 Wellcraft elite 210, 21' Cuddy Cabin.<br /><br />Anyhow, the previous owner stated he took out the original motor and put in a rebuilt Chevy 350 that was a couple of years newer.<br /><br />Here is the casting # I believe on the back on the motor (it was a little rusty so hard to read): 3970014.<br /><br />I'm trying to increase low end torque and need to know what year and ci motor I have...

Bondo, on the carb tag was "MCM 228" and below that was 1347-8296.<br /><br />I'm assuming that means the original motor was the 305, 228 hp version... right?<br /><br />Still wondering if this would benefit from after market intake and 4 barrel carb. It has a 4 barrel now but I can't believe it is making 260 hp.<br /><br />I'll double check the numbers in the day light.

Possible........<br />But, I Think you're barking up the Wrong Tree......<br />Other than Adjustment,+ Settings.... A Carb that was feeding a 305 will have No Problem feeding a 350..........

I just checked the part numbers and the carb for the 228 is exactly the same as the 260. the only difference is the block (and pistons). Even the camshaft is the same!<br /><br />Chris...........

Okay, had it out today, was hard to start and when I attempted to floor it it back fired. So I am definitely having a carb problem.<br /><br />You guys think I should just rebuild this one (I've done auto carbs so shouldn't be a problem) or just switch to after market intake and carb?
