What damage could this have caused?

My brother has a Force 50hp 1988 model 507Y8D. A couple weeks ago at the lake he could not get it to start after cranking and cranking and finally had to get towed in. When he brought it home we were looking and noticed a burnt ground wire and we had no spark. We also noticed the battery had slid back in the boat and the positive pole was making contact with the aluminum of the boat. There was a burn spot on the aluminum where it got really hot where this positive pole was touching and the battery cable was a little melted.

We replaced the ground wire, and still have no spark. We know a guy who works at a boat dealership who told us it is more than likely the CDI module.

What other damage could have been caused by this positive pole touching the side of the boat? And was the burnt wiring more a result of over-cranking and not the positive pole to boat contact?

I have a multi-meter but not a DVA attachment so I can do some testing but not a lot.

Any and all suggestions and observations are appreciated!

When you do get it fixed..
I would think a fuseable link in the positive cable may be in order.

Just to update the forum in case anyone stumbles upon this in the future.

The no spark condition I was having with the 1988 Force 50hp was due to the magnet ring coming loose from the flywheel. It was completely detached, and was stuck to the outside of the stator, and was not turning when the flywheel was turning. See the attached pic. To attach the magnet ring I shined up the inside of the flywheel with sandpaper and roughed up the outside of the magnet ring and used a 2 part epoxy made by loctite to glue it back in.

Engine fires and has good spark on all cylinders.

Thanks to all who helped.

Maybe buy a black plastic battery box at Walmart for $8, strap it down in bottom of boat, prevent battery from moving around and grounding out on side of aluminum boat. Good Luck!

or cut an old inner tube and make a post/clamp cover for the positive battery terminal
