What damage will reverse battery connections cause to a magneto system (non charging system, 1970 35 hp Chrysler)?

1. Non that I can see at this point. It started and ran w/o a problem that I could tell yesterday.

2. I went out to troubleshoot why the fish-finder that would not work yesterday to discover the batt reversed.

3. I hate to think what could be happening. Before my last trip I found all booms, winch and safety hook (5) released. A motion light alerted me that something was moving in the area, as I was about to load in the dark in the fenced in area (about 3 wks ago). This is hard to believe but I?ll add a camera if needed.

Reversing battery connections can cause a lot of damage, but I don't think magnetos, that generate their own power, would be affected.

What affect is a reversed battery connection on a starter. The starter started fine 6-8 times. What would cause the starter to run in the correct direction (the solenoid even reversed)?

I think the reverse rotation or not reversing when the battery's leads have been swapped, is due to the starter.
Had a Merc 77/85hp and crossed the wires, starter turned backards, and burned out the rectifier.
Some electric motors will turn one direction no matter what leads where?
Some will turn both ways when the leads are flipped.
Basically check the rectifier if there is one??
Not sure if it does or not?

Most starter motors are series wound and run one direction only, regardless of polarity applied.

Thanks for the info! The North TX Heat Has Retired Me. Unless I hear fish are Jumping In The Boats At Night ?Close and the water level is safe?. I like to keep the little boat ready vs needed work but recent area lake levels are causing damages and danger.

You say Most ?So did I.
Gota leave before the heat hits. That's what I do.
Fish like crazy and then when we head back.
Take out the perishiables and then clean the boat after the sun goes behind the Sycamore tree.
Thankfull I have a BIG Bimini:)
