What did I do my throttle???

Hello-

I have a 1992 Bayliner Capri with a Merc 4.3L I/O & Alpha I Gen II drive and a throttle lever with a trim and tilt button.

I was lubing the throttle linkages in the engine compartment so I moved the throttle in neutral from idle to full open. After a couple of times I heard a click or a snap from the throttle area and the throttle moved almost in a circle. Now, the throttle will engage the shifter, but the throttle in the engine compartment won't move any longer.

Do you think I broke something or something just came loose? Are the throttles easy idiot proof to work on or is this something I should let the repair shop handle? Thanks.

Good question. Are you mechanically inclined? Can you look at something and figure out how it works? Then maybe. If not don't go there it could end up being more costly then if you didn't.

Sounds like the control end of the cable either broke or the keeper came loose.

BTW if you go in to the control use white grease to lube it, not a heavy marine grease.

Thanks- I think I have some white lithium grease somewhere. I think I'm somewhat mechanically inclined. I have the manual on the throttle & I was planning on taking the cover (if it has one) off and just looking for something that doesn't look right. If the cable is broken, I have to replace it all the way from the carb to the throttle, right? Also, are they expensive?

Re: What did I do my throttle???

So you were moving the throttle back at the carburetor? While connected to the throttle cable, right? And after the snap did the throttle link make a partial circle on it's shaft for the carb? My guess is your throttle was in a very open position and then came disconnected from the cable, at which time the carburetor throttle spring took over and closed the throttle.
Or you might have pushed the cable in or out of the controller at the helm station causing some problem. If someone moves the throttle control at the helm does the cable move back at the engine? I hope you didn't break the control.
If you were just trying to free up sticky pieces and using the control to do it you can probably reconnect or replace the throttle cable. It may have just come off the throttle at the engine. This is what I hope you have since it's the cheapest and easiest fix.

Re: What did I do my throttle???

I was at the throttle moving it forward and back to neutral. I wasn't going fast, but maybe I pushed too hard when it was forward. I can move the cable from the carb end, but the throttle doesn't feel like it's hooked up to the throttle any longer. I'm thinking either I broke something or something came loose at the throttle end.

Anyone know of a "how to fix your throttle" video or link?

Thanks.

Before you need a How to Fix, you need to know What to Fix.

That's funny & true. I'll dive into when the rain stops. I'll post what I find.

It's funny how people are complaining about all the rain we've had, but we live in a desert and have a drought for years.

df909, I am pretty new to boating but I would tell you to just keep looking at it to see how it works and a manual is a great tool to have. I bent my lower shift cable and was able to install a new one. Its not that tuff if you can figure out how it all works.
