im running a 350 chev motor.mercruiser 260. im using a mallory distibutor and have had some bogging issues that i cant seem to fix. i also own a hei delco distributor. would that one be better with the built on coil? also does anyone know how to wire it up. the mallory has the pertronix kit and has 2 wires black-red(easy). the delco one has some wire plug ins that im assuming would need to be cut off and soldered up.

Welcome aboard!!!

YOur HEI delco GM dizzy with the coil on top of the cap is not USCG approved..... so.... your not going to get many positive replies on it.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Boggin' is usually a fuel delivery issue,....

What have ya done for diagnostics so far,..??

What lead ya to the distributor,..??

Re: what distributor is better?

my old mallory was not advancing because of rust . i took it apart and fixed it so that it advances now but i notice the cap hold downs dont hold the cap very tight. id like to hook up the hei delco because its the spare distributor that i have. if it works then id buy a new distributor that is marine approved.
i have cahnged all fuel lines, filters, tank, punp (i have a new mechanical pump and an electric one for testing purposes). also i put a new carb on it that made no diference.(quadrajet). ive also tried diferent coils.

If you are going to change distributors, go with the Delco EST. It's been used by Mercruiser, Volvo, and other Marine engine companies for a long time. There is plenty of parts available, and lots of technical information on it.
It is also all electronic (no weights and springs to rust up on you)
Kits with wires, coils, wiring and instructions are easy to find.

Re: what distributor is better?

bought a new delco est. ive tried a bunch of thing to get it to run right . im now onto fuel issues. i can get it to run good with an electric pump and hose from a gas can to the carb. when i use the mecahnical pump or electric pump with the fuel tank it boggs. ive replaced all the fuel lines and checked the fuel tank pick up. it gets tons of volume but i dont have a pressure guage.
im now thinking the water seperator may be the problem although i did change the filter on it.

Check the anti-siphon valve on the tank. It can be sticking and needs replaced. A pressure gauge would fill in the rst of the issues if you get one

Re: what distributor is better?

i have checked the anti-siphon valve- seems ok. i ca blow through it one way easily.
my blue holly fuel pump should be able to pump way higher than 8 psi. i have put a regulator on it to lower the pressure as recomended by a local shop. i think it pumps 15 psi without a reg.
ive played around with the reg and added more presssure while running and it didnt seem to make a differance. i kept adding pressure until i saw fuel spilling out the side of the carb.(right at the linkage).
i guess i need to get a pressure guage.- any advice on where or what one would be good.

The Blue Holley fuel pump has a 7 psi setting from the factory, it it's pumping higher then that something has changed. If you can run the pump straight and fuel comes out the carb then check your needle seat and valve for wear.

Google fuel pressure regulator and many will show up.

If it isn't your anti-siphon valve then there could be a restriction in the tank pick up tube. May need to try low pressure air and blow if backwards into the tank

Re: what distributor is better?

thanks for the quick response.
ok iwas told wrong about the blue pump. so at 7psi i should be able to run it with no regulator(or wide open reg). - straight to the carb. the carb is a new remanufacture and i have also tried the old carb that came with the boat, and ive also tried a carb of my brothers boat. (they are all the same rochester carb.) this leads me to believe its not the carb, but i could be wrong there. maybe ill take a peak at the needle seat under the float.
also the pickup tube can be pulled right out of the tank and i can see right through it. no restriction at all. the tank is new too so there shouldnt be any gunk in it.

Lets go back to your first post today. You said it runs fine with the electric fuel pump and a gas can. If this is correct you don't have a carb issue. You fuel pump may be weak, but this is a maybe.

when i use the mecahnical pump or electric pump with the fuel tank it boggs. ive replaced all the fuel lines and checked the fuel tank pick up. it gets tons of volume but i dont have a pressure guage.

When you use the boat tank feed you have issues. You replaced lines and water/separator filter. I don't see both a mechanical fuel pump and an electric all being weak but it is possible. Your anti-siphon valve is OK because you can blow on it.

Your last post

I don't see an issue with the carb since you have tried three. I mentioned the carb before because you said you increased pressure and fuel came out the linkage. Don't know how you did that, but if it did happen then yes check the needle seat. I would get a pressure gauge and check pressure. Blow the gas lines out

Re: what distributor is better?

I'm not convinced this is your solution but I just had a thought about your gas coming out of the linkage remark.
If gas came out where the linkage pivots go in the body of the carb that's a vacuum leak. Did it leak down at the bottom pivots? Those bottom ones are the throttle shafts. The shafts in the upper part of the carb are for the choke and the secondary air doors, they aren't as likely to be worn.
Try squirting some carb cleaner around the openings and base while the motor is running. If it changes the engine speed, fix the air leak.
My carb book says worn pivot openings are more likely in car motors because of the constantly changing throttle position on car engines. Whereas boat motors do more steady speed use.
So, if there's a vacuum leak complain to your carb guy. If he won't help, you can order shaft bushings from carb repair shops.
Does it bog when you gun it? Or only at higher RPM? Or other times?
Some Quadrajets bog when the secondaries open too fast or too slow. There's a spring on the secondary air door shaft that can get adjusted wrong.
Here's how they are set.
You loosen the upward facing torx or allen screw that tensions the slotted barrel on the starboard end of the secondary air shaft..., at the same time hold a thin screw driver tip in the slotted barrel end, it's just in front of the linkage on the starboard end of the air horn. Slightly turn the slotted barrel to adjust the spring force. But go slow. If the barrel turns till the spring gets too loose it will fall off the link and you'll end up taking the carb apart to reconnect it. So the important thing is to keep at least a little tension on the spring.
The spring is supposed to be from 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn from loose.
