What do I have here?

Hi,

I've been reading all the good info on here and decided to join. I figured someone on here could probably answer a question for me. I recently bought a used fiberglass pontoon boat to restore that has a Mercury 40HP 2 stroke, 4 Cyl. oil injected, (the tank is inside the cowl), motor. The boat is an '89, but I can't find any data plate on the motor. I would like to get a service manual for the motor and find out what oil goes in the PTT unit. I have it running, but of course want to replace the water pump and anything else it needs. I grew up with OMC products, but Mercurys were never very popular around here due to their lack of corrosion resistance. A problem that I have heard has been improved. Anyway, to stop rambling, I am hoping someone can put me in the ball
park as to the model year of this motor. Or is there another place on the motor with the serial number other than the absent data plate?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

You will need to find the SN of the motor. Then you will be able to get all that info. I am not 100% sure where the number is located, you may want to start a thread asking where the SN is on Merc out boards. Then Mercs web site should be able to tell you the specs on the motor.

Welcome to Iboats!

Re: What do I have here?

I did a quick search and found this. Hope it helps!

Every Mercury outboard has a serial number label located on the transom bracket area of the engine. The latest serial number labels display a manufacturing date that shows the year of production. For example, an engine boxed during 2009 will read "2009" just above the serial number.

Thanks for the replies, I can not find a label on the transom bracket of this motor. I was hoping maybe someone knew of an alternate location. If it was indeed a label or tag, its just seems like it would be so easily removable that Mercury would also put it elsewhere. I'll keep looking.
