What do I need to install power trim on 140hp Evinrude

I'm looking to buy a used power tilt/trim unit for a 1978 Evinrude 140hp (140883C). I'm wondering what kind of additional parts I would need for the installation if that's even possible. I heard the term relay tossed around. Right now the motor just has a hydraulic cylinder what I believe just provides support for manually adjusting the trim (I could be wrong on this). Any help would be great.

If you can find a complete working tilt/trim assembly then all you really need is a tilt/trim switch and a solenoid and some wire. The problem is finding a good unit and maintaining it may be expensive.

Might want to consider a CMC bracket instead.

Check around on prices. I've put some of the CMC brackets on mtrs and they are easy to install and work good.

If you plan to purchase a used trim unit, keep in mind that OMC made two types. The early 3-wire type, up through mid-year 1981. The 2-wire system came out mid 1981 later. Both units have an electrical box. Unfortunately, you can't mix parts between systems. You'll need to make sure when you purchase, that you get the right control boxes. Your year takes the 3 wire system with the control box which mounts remotely under the rear splashwell. It uses a single solenoid. The control box for the 2 wire systems mounted on the engine's exhaust cover. It uses a pair of relays. Your engine does not have the mounting holes on the rear exhaust cover to mount the later 2-wire box. These engines were extremely popular in their day-there have to be hundreds of good trim used units available. Check ebay and marine salvage yards.

I just installed a 3 wire unit and wiring was a piece of ****, wiring cost me about 35 bucks, 2 heavy duty relays (used one for down as well while I was doing it) circuit breaker, power post and jiffy box to hold it all, had the terminals and tinned wire already. Works a treat! And really simple to wire, I have a pic I can post if it would help?

Here is a pic of the relay bow I made up, it sits behind my battery box under the out board well. nice and out of the way, has a sealed lid and sealed the holes where the wires come in with silicone, there are a few diagrams for wiring on this site but if you get stuck drop me a line. Other photos are of when I bought the boat and now with the trim fitted.

Hope it helps
