OK, Mercruiser serial numbers are a bit confusing to me and I'd venture a guess to many others as well.

The numbers are good as far as they go. Then we start to add a letter :( to the beginning of the number and that's where the confusion begins for me at least.

A number series goes how far and then which letters are in the series? Does it start at Axxxxx after 1000000 or after 7000000 or where did the numbers end and the letters pick up? Do we then go to Bxxxxx and Cxxxxx etcetra?

Does an A prefix in the number A303793 (in the case of an outdrive) indicate an Alpha drive? or just another number?

This can make it troublesome to order parts and have any confidence that it is indeed the RIGHT part.

Any help in deciphering this is appreciated.

Thanks all

As long as you have the correct number like OF123456 you will get the correct part

There is really nothing to worry about

It's just a numbering system Mercury Marine uses for all their engines and drives. Don't try to read anything into them, the letters and numbers do not indicate anything you can read from them. Not year, not engine, not drive type, nothing.
