Trying to help a bud find out if this is indeed a 1988 outboard - the numbers he gave me are 887531. I have no earthly idea where he found them but it is a Johnson ob. ????
It's a 25 hp monster!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that is supposed to be the serial number, it corresponds to a 1951. However, it probably is just a parts casting number he found somewhere. Need much more info.

Model number for '88 Johnson 25 horsepower should be something like

J25ECCM, or J25ELCCM - the J25 (Johnson 25) and the CC (1988) are the important parts of that number.

Hey, thanks for the reply. So where would you need to look for any additional info? I mentioned it should be on the upper unit somewhere - but that was all he found. He's old like me - could that be a problem? :D

I'd say that's your number one problem right there. That and not enough rye are a pretty deadly combination.

You should be finding it on the port side of the transom bracket.

There's a secondary place to look if you can't find it there, but let's keep it simple for the old coot, eh?
