What do you guys think about using old guages in a restoration?

My boat is from 1981 and the guages are too, should I spring for new ones $$$$$ or try and get away with cleaning up the old ones. I am not using the original motor and I am wondering if the trim guage is universal to fit different outboards?

The tach and fuel gage should work. You might have to switch to a different cylinder setting on the tach. The temp gage and oil pressure gage, you might have to use the senders that are on the motor thats in the boat now.

Hey if you can save a buck or two I would say go for it. Further down the road when money feels better or a deal comes by then you can change them out. Trim gauges may require a different sending unit from brand to brand outboard

it's only original once.
not that every boat is a classic, but I like keeping things the way they were.

83vert,
Your options are endless.
Ask yourself the questions.
What look do you want?
What makes since?
What can you afford or are willing to spend?

The answers will answer your own question.
Personally, I want new gages with white faces.:D
I just like the look.

Have fun

I gotta agree! There is something about original stuff in a boat. Maybe not now, but someday. There is alot to be said about being PC (period correct) Here is a pic of the gauges in my '68 MFG.
